Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements
  • Minimum Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Academic Requirements: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
    • NCEA Level 3: Successful completion of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3, including:
      • 14 credits in each of three approved subjects.
      • Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing.
      • Numeracy: 10 credits at Level 1 or above.
    • Equivalent Qualifications: Completion of an equivalent secondary school qualification, such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), meeting the University Entrance standard.
    • Foundation Programmes: Satisfactory completion of an approved foundation or bridging programme from a recognised New Zealand tertiary education provider.
  • International students must demonstrate English langugae proficiency to enrol in programmes ranging from Level 3 to Level 10 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF).​
  • Internationally Recognised English Proficiency Tests. The table below summarises the minimum English language proficiency scores required for enrolment at various programme levels:

  • To be admitted into the NZCEL (Academic) Level 4 programme, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Academic Requirement:
    • Successful completion of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) Level 3, or an equivalent qualification.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    • An internationally recognised English language test result, such as:
      • IELTS Academic: Overall score of 5.5, with no band lower than 5.0; Or,
      • An NZQA-approved equivalent Or,
    • Satisfactory result in CIM’s internal placement test
  • To be admitted into the NZCEL (Academic) Level 5 programme, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
  • Minimum Age: 16 years
  • Academic Requirement:
    • Successful completion of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) Level 4, or an equivalent qualification.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    • An internationally recognised English language test result, such as:
      • IELTS Academic: Overall score of 6.0, with no band lower than 5.5; Or,
      • An NZQA-approved equivalent Or,
    • Satisfactory result in CIM’s internal placement test.
